More Than a Million People Without Power Across US

More than a million customers in the U.S. were left without power Sunday as a severe winter storm blanketed southern tree branches and power lines in dense ice.

Tennessee was hit hardest, with more than 300,000 customers losing power, while more than 100,000 customers were left in the dark in Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana each, according to Poweroutage.com.

Ice and snowfall is expected to continue across much of the country through Monday, after which very low temperatures will cause “hazardous travel and infrastructure impacts” to persist for several more days, the National Weather Service said.

Heavy snowfall was expected from the Ohio Valley to the Northeast, while “catastrophic ice accumulation” was threatened from the Lower Mississippi Valley to the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast.

Extremely cold temperatures are expected to persist for the next several days, which could complicate efforts to repair power and other infrastructure, National Weather Service meteorologist Allison Santorelli said in a telephone interview.
