There was nothing more telling about Jake Weatherald’s third Test innings than how the young man could easily move into senior partner when he was alongside Travis Head on a steamy and rowdy Gabba afternoon in the second Ashes Test.
Now Weatherald showed both fearlessness and determination to ensure England could not repeat Mitchell Starc’s feat on day one, as Head took a leading role to gallop home in pursuit of 205 wins in Perth.

By doing so, Weatherald gave Australia’s selectors a nod of approval following the contentious call to drop Nathan Lyon on day one. It also showed that for the first time since David Warner’s retirement, there is real hope that the national team will find a new opening that will set the agenda in a sustainable way.
72 was not the hundred Weatherald would have liked and he ended it with a sore foot from Jofra Archer’s toe breaker which left him pinned lbw.
But their runs came with enough authority and pace to deal a significant blow to England’s pace attack and make life much easier for Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith as day turned into night.
