Man to face court charged with murdering son

A father has been charged with murder after allegedly stabbing his 34-year-old son at a Gold Coast home.
Detective Inspector Mark Mooney said the 54-year-old man called his nephew and “gave him information”. [him] He allegedly stabbed his son multiple times at a home in McCrae Court, Maudsland, at around 6.40pm on Monday.
“There was no one there at the time,” Mooney said.
When the police arrived at the scene, they found the father in the living room.
“He was very quiet and definitely didn’t try to hide it from us or anything like that,” Mooney said.
Mooney added that the 34-year-old man returned to his home near Helensvale “a couple of weeks” before he was killed.
He could not say where in the house the young man was killed or what wounds were fatal, but said the scene was “pretty striking.”
“[They are] very sad events…our thoughts are with the family,” Mooney said.
Police officers had yet to find the alleged murder weapon as of Tuesday afternoon, but were investigating “numerous knives in the home” that police had seized.
The father has been charged with one count of murder (a domestic violence offense) and is scheduled to appear before Southport Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
“We have no record of domestic violence between either party living at this address. [there]Mooney said.
“Obviously we talked to a lot of family members. They gave us different versions of events and what was going on in that family environment.”
He said neighbors did not notice a disturbance leading up to the incident and the 54-year-old father was uncooperative with police.
Police said there is no ongoing threat to the community and the state Homicide Victim Support Group is ready to assist surviving family members.
