Man Utd v Aston Villa: How Jadon Sancho’s dream United move became a nightmare

The conflict between Ten Hag and Sancho lasted four months; Sancho joined Dortmund on loan for the remainder of the season and helped them reach the Champions League final.

But they couldn’t afford to keep him, and although United sporting director Dan Ashworth had the authority to broker a ceasefire allowing Sancho to join United ahead of the 2024 season, it was a temporary situation that Chelsea appeared to have resolved by agreeing to a loan that tied them to a permanent transfer at the end of the season.

However, Chelsea opted to pay a £5 million fine to send Sancho back to Old Trafford after scoring 5 goals in 41 appearances.

There was no olive branch this time. Sancho was placed in Ruben Amorim’s ‘bomb squad’ and had to train away from the first team until joining Villa on 1 September.

United have the option to extend Sancho’s contract for another year, otherwise it will expire this summer. They keep their position on this issue secret from the public. Nobody expects this to happen.

At 25, Sancho still has a lot to offer. There have been signs of quality throughout his time at Villa, but it is far from certain that he will remain there until the end of the season.

“When we see Jadon up close, he has a lot of technical ability,” said current United interim head coach Michael Carrick, who worked with Sancho as part of Solskjaer’s backroom team and managed him for three matches during his brief tenure following the Norwegian’s sacking.

“In and around the penalty area; his carrying of the ball; his little plays; his connections; his creativity; the way he controls the ball; he has a natural talent.

“He’s always been on top of it. It’s part of football.

“But I’m not talking about Jadon individually in this, that’s just the way it is and the way it should be.”

“You can’t assume everything will go well. It’s proven to not always be that way.”

“You have to find a way to overcome it. When you play in a good team with good players, a good squad and depth, it’s part of the fight to stay at the top.”
