Manchester United caretaker manager: Talks held with Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Manchester United have held preliminary talks with former players Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer about becoming the club’s interim manager until the end of the season.
The talks are still at a very early stage and it is not yet known who the leading candidate will be to replace Ruben Amorim on an interim basis for the remainder of the campaign.
Amorim was sacked on Monday after a tumultuous 14-month tenure and former United midfielder Fletcher was appointed interim manager.
While the club plans to name Amorim’s permanent successor in the summer, the Scot will remain in charge until a caretaker is appointed.
Director of football Jason Wilcox has spoken to Fletcher and former United team-mates Solskjaer and Carrick about taking on the role, while another former United player, Ruud van Nistelrooy, is also believed to be a candidate.
Van Nistelrooy had three wins and one draw in his four matches as manager in 2024.
Solskjaer initially took on a similar role when United sacked Jose Mourinho in 2018 and then became full-time manager for three years before leaving in 2021.
Carrick has been unemployed since leaving Middlesbrough last June.
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner and former Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi, now at Marseille, are understood to be the first candidates for the full-time job.
Glasner, who won the FA Cup with the Eagles last season, was asked about the connection at Tuesday’s press conference.
He said: “I’m the manager of Crystal Palace and there’s no point in asking me any more questions about it.”
