Maneka Calls for Unified Animal Rescue Network

hyderabad: Animal welfare advocate and former Union minister Maneka Gandhi on Friday called for a coordinated, district-level rescue system and a unified network of welfare groups in interaction with volunteers and organizations in Banjara Hills, organized by People for the Protection of Animals (PFA) Abhaya. The meeting also outlined a plan combining rapid response implementation with the launch of a state federation to strengthen efforts on the ground.
“Animal lovers and organizations should form unity and avoid conflicts among themselves. Awareness and understanding of animal welfare laws are essential for effective action,” Gandhi said. He added: “Volunteers should remain active in the field and support shelters where necessary, and government veterinary clinics should be upgraded to appropriate standards.” Gandhi also called for stringent action against illegal bird trade, regulation of pet shops and closer monitoring of gaushalas and poultry units.
An important announcement made during the session was the establishment of Telangana Animal Welfare Federation (TAWF), which aims to bring individuals and organizations on a common platform. Participants were invited to join the federation and contribute to coordinated efforts across the state.
The meeting also introduced the Rapid Response (RRT) App, defined as a district-level rescue network that connects injured animals to nearby volunteers. The app allows users to send an SOS alert with location and contact information that can be viewed by registered volunteers in the same area. Alerts remain active for up to 60 minutes, with responses subject to voluntary participation.
The proposed plan includes a target of 10,000 app downloads per region. Recommendations discussed at the session included launching “No Leather in Schools” initiatives, establishing animal welfare associations in colleges, training healthcare professionals to be pet-friendly, and encouraging enrollment in pet insurance.
