Manipur: BJP MLAs meet in Delhi to discuss peace process

Guwahati: BJP MPs held a meeting at the party headquarters in Delhi on Sunday and discussed the peace process and formation of people’s government in the state.

A BJP leader said that more than 30 BJP MPs, including former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh and Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh, attended the meeting.

He said two senior Union BJP leaders – National General Secretary (Organisation) BL Santhosh and party’s Northeast coordinator Sambit Patra. Manipur BJP President Adhikarimayum Sharda Devi also attended the important meeting.
In a post on its official X account, the BJP said: “Manipur BJP Legislative Assembly Party meeting was held today at the BJP headquarters in Delhi in the presence of BJP National General Secretary (Organisation) BL Santhosh ji and party’s Northeast Coordinator Sambit Patra ji.”

The debate is centered on the peace and progress of Manipur, the BJP said in an X post.

BJP MPs from Manipur, including former Prime Minister Biren Singh and Speaker Satyabrata Singh, arrived in Delhi on Saturday to attend a meeting called by the party’s Central leadership on Sunday.
BJP leaders in Imphal had earlier stated that discussions on Sunday’s crucial meeting were likely to revolve around government formation. Before leaving for Delhi, former Chief Minister Biren Singh had said that the central leadership of the BJP had instructed every BJP MLA in the state to attend the meeting.

The BJP has 37 MLAs in the 60-member Manipur Assembly. In October, 26 BJP MLAs, including N. Biren Singh, met BL Santhosh and Sambit Patra in Delhi and urged them to “form a popular government” in Manipur and expressed their readiness to continue ruling as a united team.

Former Chief Minister Biren Singh recently said that all BJP legislators in Manipur remain united in their efforts to form a popular government in the state.

While he declined to comment on individual views expressed by legislators, he added that the process of forming a government was already underway.

The term of the 60-member Manipur Assembly, which was suspended after the promulgation of President’s Rule, is till 2027.

Following ethnic violence that broke out between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo people on May 3, 2023, over 260 people were killed, over 1,500 injured and over 70,000 displaced when a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was held in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
