Samantha Bee calls civility ‘overrated’ on Stacey Abrams’ podcast

Samantha Bee told Stacey Abrams on Thursday that kindness was “undervalued” and “overrated” during what they described as an “authoritarian” regime.

The former “Full Frontal” host joins the former Georgia gubernatorial candidate on Abrams’ podcast “Assembly RequiredThey discussed the role of political comedy during the second Trump administration.

“I think what you do so masterfully in your comedy is that you agree with Roxane Gay, who wrote a piece, I think. “The MAGA right always wanted the left to be civil, as if there was a perfect, polite way to discuss humanity,” Abrams said in September.“He calls this a fantasy and argues that we don’t need to be nice when people’s rights and lives are at stake.”

Abrams asked Bee what role he thinks civility plays in political comedy and discourse. Bee suggested that politeness should not be a factor.

“People are always telling you to be quiet, be nice, and compromise yourself,” Bee said. “If you’re compromising everything, and people with power and control aren’t giving up anything, then I don’t understand… I think kindness in those things feels pretty devalued.”

He continued, “So sometimes you just have to stand up and scream. Otherwise, whether it has an impact on the outcome or not, at least everyone else who feels the same way as you gets some kind of catharsis. Maybe it’s motivating in some way. I think kindness is pretty overrated.”

Bee quickly clarified that he was not advocating political violence and was merely referring to “rhetoric.”

During the podcast, Bee added that the situation is “really scary” for late-night comedians due to Stephen Colbert’s cancellation and Jimmy Kimmel’s brief suspension. He called out rich people for not being able to stand up to President Donald Trump even though they had the financial means to do so.

“What’s the point of having that kind of money if you never say ‘f— you’ with it?” Bee said. “F—you, like all people with money, should stand up right now and say ‘f—you’ directly in every industry. And they’re not actually doing that because it seems like for a lot of people, no amount of money is f—you money anymore.”

Bee’s show “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee” premiered in 2016 and runs until 2022. He was known for his controversial remarks, including an episode in 2018 in which he called Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump an “incompetent motherfucker.”
