A large water tank collapsed in the Thammanam area of Kochi, Kerala, in the early hours of Monday, November 10, 2025, causing water to gush into nearby houses, damaging vehicles and property.

The incident took place after the wall of the drinking water storage tank of the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) burst. The ground-level reservoir, with a capacity of 1.35 crore litres, is reportedly around 50 years old and consists of two compartments. The wall of one of these chambers, namely a tank with a capacity of 68 lakh litres, was broken.

Authorities suspect that the age of the structure may have been the cause of the accident.

Water source will be hit

Following the incident, drinking water will be cut in many parts of Kochi Corporation.

According to KWA, areas from Vyttila to Petta and Thammanam to Cherannallur will experience water shortage. Pumping into the old areas was scheduled for Tuesday and this will also be affected after the incident.

KWA is considering repair work as the other compartment of the tank remains undamaged.

Water supply in Vennala district will not be affected as pumping there is handled by an 85 lakh liter ground-level reservoir at Thammanam.
