Masters champion Rory McIlroy makes major warning after second Augusta win

When McIlroy built a six-stroke advantage at the halfway point without being at his best over the last four days, he showed a freedom that has eluded him for much of the chase to make all the majors.

“I’m glad the Grand Slam event was completed last year because that’s what I was after,” he said.

“And now looking forward, it’s all icing on the cake or the cherry on top, all gravy, whatever you want to call it.

“But I feel like I can go play my game and have a chance to win a lot more majors.”

Cameron Young, who threatens McIlroy’s title defence, looked as if he was enjoying the contest after watching his riveting clash with brave and unlucky veteran Justin Rose and world number one Scheffler.

It was less stressful than previous years, it was a sports event that would be enjoyed more. “I definitely felt more comfortable in the battle on the back nine this year than I did last year,” McIlroy said.

“It’s more of a want than a need. I want to win the biggest tournaments in the world. I want to win Ryder Cups. I want to win majors.

“That’s what’s pushing me forward at this point in my career. I think it would really sting if I didn’t win this tournament after having such a commanding lead in the first two days.

“It would bother me, but I would also dust myself off and go for the PGA at Aronimink, the U.S. Open at Shinnecock or [Open Championship] In Birkdale or something.

“But this is a great start to the big season and I can’t wait for what’s to come.”
