Matt Dawson column: ‘England players now double in size in shirt’

Tommy Freeman is rapidly approaching world-class status.

The package he brings to Test rugby – pace, size, aerial ability and appetite for the ball – is quite special.

He was a starter for the British and Irish Lions in all three Tests against Australia in the summer and has signed for this England squad as one of those who will always have a place when available.

However, there is a question mark about what number Borthwick will write next to Freeman’s name.

This was Freeman’s 23rd cap for England, but only his third as centre.

He was pretty good against Wales, given his relatively insignificant midfield experience.

He scored excellent lines, either boldly striking the ball into the heart of the Wales defense or acting as a decoy, and at the age of 12 he worked instinctively with Northampton team-mate Fraser Dingwall.

They make a dangerous and harmonious duo and England have been crying out for a midfield combination with these qualities for years.

While the supply of centers was once quite low, there are now many alternatives.

Ollie Lawrence, who is trying to recover from a minor knee injury, could be transferred to Scotland. Max Ojomoh was very impressive against Argentina in the autumn. Seb Atkinson has credit in the bank for his performances on the summer tour in Argentina.

This means England can mix and match depending on the opponent.

Do they want a punch in midfield or the ability to spread quickly into wide channels? Is it the gas on the outside or the ability to probe behind with kicks?

The ability to change tactics with different midfield choices is very, very exciting.

It’s the same standard in South Africa, which is currently the gold standard for everyone in world rugby.

The mix of Damian de Allende, Jesse Kriel, Canan Moodie, Damian Willemse and even Andre Esterhuizen gives them different playing styles.

This adaptability is a great asset for any team.
