Matt Dawson on Scotland beating England on Six Nations

I can easily get over the losses that stick with me in the Six Nations because they can take you to a really dark place at times.

Scotland 2000, Ireland 2001 and France 2002; It all still hurts.

I participated in all these campaigns and came away from three consecutive Grand Slams with a single victory.

It’s important to take stock now and remember that defeat will happen again at some point before the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

England will be licking their wounds after another crushing defeat against Scotland, but they still have a title to play for even if a potential Grand Slam is over.

The chance to win a Grand Slam doesn’t come along very often, and that’s the truth.

Last week I said it would be foolish to draw a straight line from the opening weekend to the Grand Slam match in Paris.

That’s exactly why this tournament is magical.

Two wins and England will be in position to go to Paris and perhaps try to win the title.

There is a lot to focus on and be excited about and Murrayfield’s upset will make England a better team.

It’s not easy to get big wins away from home in the Six Nations and Saturday was another victory that eluded Steve Borthwick.

It’s not just about winning on another venue, as the World Cup is being held on neutral territory in Australia.

It’s about the different feeling and home comfort outside of the Twickenham environment.

As impressive as their 12-match winning streak is, England still need the South African mentality; Wherever you go in the world, you are expected to win and succeed globally.

Borthwick has yet to go and win the Six Nations against Scotland, Ireland or France.

Most of the difficulties come from playing away and Saturday presented the England players with more of these scenarios.

They are unlikely to win the World Cup without an away victory being declared beforehand.
