The wife of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing renewed scrutiny after reports that she liked a social media post on Oct. 7, 2023, dismissing the investigation into sexual violence committed during a Hamas terrorist attack in Israel as a “gang rape” hoax.
Rama Duwaji allegedly liked a February 2024 Instagram post claiming that the New York Times investigation into sexual violence during the October 7 attack was “fabricated.” Free Press.
The report adds to a series of controversial social media interactions by Duwaji that have emerged in recent days.
Duwaji, a Houston-born illustrator who identifies as Syrian and married Mamdani in early 2025, also liked several posts criticizing Israel in the immediate aftermath of the Oct. 7 attack: Jewish Insider was first reported.

A post shared by the “Slow Factory” Instagram account on the day of the attack included an image of a bulldozer breaking through the barrier separating Israel from Gaza and people riding on a captured Israel Defense Forces (IDF) vehicle.
The text on the images read “Tearing down the walls of apartheid and military occupation” and the slogan “Resisting apartheid since 1948” and “Systemic change for collective liberation”.
As of Saturday, Duwaji’s likes on this post continued to be visible publicly.
Additional posts he participated in were shared by the “People’s Forum” Instagram account and included support for anti-Israel protests, calls to cut U.S. aid to Israel, and activists’ organizing efforts.

One post Duwaji liked included the slogan “from river to sea.” According to Jewish Insider, the slogan “is often understood as a call for the complete destruction of Israel from the lands between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea.”
A City Hall spokesperson told Jewish Insider: “Mayor Mamdani has been clear and consistent: Hamas is a terrorist organisation, October 7 is a horrific war crime, and he has unequivocally condemned this violence.”
When asked about her husband’s social media activities at a press conference on Friday, Mamdani described Duwaji as a “special person.”
