In May, solar power surpassed coal in U.S. electricity generation; renewable resource surpassed fossil fuel for the first time in a calendar month.
Last month, 12.8 percent of U.S. electricity was provided by solar energy, while 12.2 percent was from coal, according to Wednesday’s report from clean energy think tank Ember, which analyzed monthly and hourly data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
As the U.S. looks to add new sources of electricity to meet the insatiable power needs of AI data centers, solar energy use is also on the rise.
The solar industry has managed to grow despite the Trump administration taking steps to curb its rise. Unlike solar and wind, it prefers traditional electricity sources, including coal and nuclear, that can produce energy around the clock.
