Measles: Several exposure sites in South West, Great Southern after two new cases confirmed

Measles cases in Western Australia have reached a 30-year high as health authorities this week added more than a dozen new exposure sites in the South West and Great South regions.

The Ministry of Health said two new cases of measles have been confirmed; One locally acquired case was reported in the South West, relating to a traveler who returned from Indonesia late last month, and another case in the Great South, originating from a traveler who had recently returned from Indonesia.

Shops, a brewery, regional emergency service and Perth International Airport are among the latest exposure sites added to the public health alert.

Anyone who has been in the following locations at the specified times should monitor for symptoms of the highly contagious virus for seven to 18 days after exposure.

Symptoms usually appear after about 10 days and include fever, fatigue, runny nose, cough and eye pain. These symptoms are typically followed three to four days later by a red, splotchy rash that begins on the face before spreading to the rest of the body.

There have been 54 cases of measles in Western Australia this year. The last year in which cases exceeded the current caseload was 1997, when 82 cases were recorded.

Health officials are urging people born after 1965 to make sure they have received two documented doses of the measles-containing vaccine at some point in their lives.

Contact tracing is ongoing and more exposure locations may be added public health alert in the coming days.
