Medak MP Urges Centre for Second Terminal at Shamshabad Airport Amid Capacity Crunch

Hyderabad: Medak MP M. Raghunandan Rao on Thursday pressed the Center to approve a second terminal at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Shemshabad, stating that increasing passenger traffic was pushing the limits of the facility.
Raghunandan Rao, who raised the issue during Zero Hour in Lok Sabha, cited official data showing that 35 lakh passengers used the airport in 2025-26, approaching its peak annual capacity of 40 lakh. “Domestic and international tourist influx is increasing rapidly and demanding immediate expansion,” Rao said.
Highlighting Telangana’s infrastructure deficit, Rao said the state has only one major airport compared to eight airports in neighboring Andhra Pradesh. He urged the state government to expedite land acquisition to set up new airports in the state.
Rao also called for expedited support from the state for the development of two airports at Mamnoor and Adilabad near Warangal, which have already been approved by the Centre.
At a time when aviation travel is growing rapidly in the state, Rao expressed hope that the construction of new airports and the second terminal at Shamshabad will gain momentum under the administration of Union civil aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu. He stated that new airports will ensure economic development of the state if the state quickly addresses bottlenecks such as land acquisition.
