Bonnie Tyler, 74, ‘is in an induced coma after her condition deteriorated following emergency bowel surgery in Portugal’

It was stated that Bonnie Tyler was in an ‘induced coma’ in Portugal after it was reported that her health had deteriorated on Thursday.

The legendary Welsh singer, 74, underwent emergency bowel surgery in the Algarve after being admitted to Faro Hospital with a perforated bowel late last month.

Local media reported this afternoon that although he was stable yesterday, his condition had worsened in the last few hours.

Reputable Portuguese daily newspaper Correio da Manha He said that he was now ‘unconscious’ and breathing with the help of a respirator.

It was also reported that the Total Eclipse Of The Heart singer was transferred from the intermediate care unit to the intensive care unit.

The newspaper said: ‘Bonnie Tyler is in an induced coma after spending several days in Faro Hospital following bowel surgery.

‘We have learned that the singer is unconscious and on a ventilator in the intensive care unit.’

It was also reported that the doctors caring for him admitted that they could not predict how things would develop in the coming hours. It is understood that Bonnie was hospitalized on April 30.

A spokesman for Bonnie, who splits her time between southern Portugal and the UK, said the day before: ‘We are very sorry to announce that Bonnie has been admitted to hospital in her home town of Faro, Portugal, for emergency bowel surgery.

‘The surgery went well and he is now recovering.

‘We know all his family, friends and fans will be concerned about this news and wish him well for a full and speedy recovery.’

The star is best known for her 1983 No.1 hit Total Eclipse Of The Heart and had four other Top Ten hits including It’s A Heartache and Holding Out For A Hero.

Bonnie competed in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2013, representing England, and came 19th with her song Believe In Me.

The 80s legend admitted earlier this year that he gets regular Botox but insisted: ‘Thank God I’m pretty age-appropriate. And I will never retire. I’m looking at Tom Jones. She’s amazing.

‘His voice is as strong as ever and he has ten years on me.’

Speaking to the Mirror last year, the actress said: ‘I started singing when I was 17 and I never thought I could still do it at this age. I’ve slowed down a bit, but now I know I’ll never retire.

‘Although I was very lucky to be in Portugal when the first lockdown was announced, by the end of the lockdown I was fed up. I was going crazy. I had to get back on the road!’

Speaking in March, Bonnie talked about the pain in her knees, which was her only real health concern at the time.

The couple split their time between their homes in Portugal and South Wales.

He first bought a property in the Algarve in the 1970s and fell in love with the region while recording an album.

In 2009, he demolished his five-bedroom villa in Albufeira to build an all-glass-fronted house with elaborate garden water features.

He said of the area: ‘It’s a magical place where you can sail out to sea at midnight and enjoy a barbecue, and return to shore early in the morning to find the local bars still open.’

Bonnie and her husband, a former Olympian Judo athlete, also own several rental properties in Portugal.

Speaking to The Sunday Times about her luxury property in Albufeira in 2023, Bonnie said: ‘In the early 1980s I bought a fully furnished villa with my husband down the road between Albufeira and Vilamoura.

‘Ten years ago we flattened it and hired a Spanish architect to design a state-of-the-art house with large windows and a large terrace area so we could enjoy the sea views. Portugal is like heaven. ‘We spend six months of the year there.’

Bonnie has many famous friends in the area with whom she often socialises.

He explains: ‘We socialize with friends and go out to dinner at one of the many Portuguese restaurants in our area. We used to meet Cliff Richard, but he doesn’t have a home in Portugal anymore.

‘However, he invited us to stay at his home in Barbados. We went out for lunch and dinner a lot with friends. He even took us to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s house. Barbados was gorgeous, although it was quite strange to look out the window and see Cliff weeding his garden.’

And of her property empire, she added: ‘My husband is very good at investing in property. In the 1970s he and his business partner bought a lot of land in New Zealand.

‘At first we had a cashmere goat farm; It later became a dairy farm.

‘We sold it earlier this year. We also have 65 stables in Lambourn, Berkshire, which we rent to the Jockey Club. ‘We had 22 houses in Berkshire but sold 17 of them.’

Despite being in her mid-70s, Bonnie has no intention of retiring and will continue to perform in the UK and Europe towards the end of the year.
