Medvedev Upsets Alcaraz, Sets Up Indian Wells Final vs Sinner

INDIAN WELLS, California: Daniil Medvedev inflicted the first defeat of the year on top seed Carlos Alcaraz with a 6-3, 7-6 (3) victory in Indian Wells on Saturday and advanced to the final.

Medvedev, ranked 11th from Russia, will face second-ranked Italian Jannik Sinner. Sinner defeated Alexander Zverev 6-2, 6-4.

Alcaraz has won 16 matches in a row this year, including the Australian Open and Qatar Open titles. However, Medvedev ruled out the possibility of an Alcaraz-Sinner finale. Medvedev has lost his last four meetings against Alcaraz, including defeat in the Indian Wells final in 2024. This was Medvedev’s first victory over him since the US Open semifinals in 2023.

Sinner defeated Zverev in a quick 1 hour and 23 minutes. Sinner scored six aces against fourth-seeded Zverev.

Zverev won his first eight points on serve. However, Sinner defeated Zverev in both the fifth and seventh games to secure the first set. Sinner now leads the head-to-head series against Zverev 7-4.

In the women’s doubles final, Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova defeated Anna Danilina and Aleksandra Krunic with sets of 7-6 (4), 6-4. The victory was Townsend’s first at Indian Wells and Siniakova’s second. Siniakova also won in 2023 alongside her long-time partner Barbora Krejcikova.

Townsend and Siniakova defeated Danilina and Krunic in 94 minutes, thanks in large part to winning 80% of their first serve points and 82% of their second serve points.
