Meghalaya CM Urges Action Against Racial Bullying After Delhi Assault

Shilong: Seeking action on the alleged attack of two men from the northeast in a park in Delhi, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday said racist bullying against people in the region cannot be accepted as the “new normal”.

Sangma said two men from Manipur and Assam were physically assaulted near the Saket District Court complex in Delhi, describing the incident as “sickening”.

“We are outraged by the repeated attacks on the people of the North East in mainland India. The physical attack on two of our people from Manipur and Assam near Delhi’s Saket Court is sickening,” he said in a post on X.

Tagging Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta in the post, he added, “Racist bullying should not be accepted as the new normal and we must take action against it. Urge authorities to take strict action.”

The incident took place on Sunday evening when a woman from Manipur and her friend were walking in a park near the Saket court complex, police said.

A group of men allegedly made comments about them.

“When one of the women objected to the remarks, an argument broke out and the suspect allegedly attacked her,” a police officer said.

“After receiving information about the incident, the police team came to the scene and contacted the victim. The teams are in constant contact with the victim and the necessary action will be taken in line with the woman’s statement,” he said.

Sources said that identification and tracking efforts of the suspects are continuing.
