Merritt Distilling founder Sarah James-Martin killed in horrific Bussell Highway truck crash

A memorial service has been held for Cowaramup winemaker Sarah James-Martin, who died in a crash on the Bussell Highway.
The major crash team is asking for information from the public as they investigate the crash.
The 53-year-old Cowaramup woman died in the crash near Metricup at around 3.45pm on Friday.
A truck, tractor trailers and two cars, including Ms James-Martin’s Suburu Outback, collided near Harmans Mill Road.
He was airlifted to Royal Perth Hospital but did not survive.
Ms James-Martin was the founder of Merritt Distilling, which created the award-winning Oceanic Gin, and was the Craft Alliance South West WA representative and co-owner of Wines of Merritt.
The community, including Football Margaret River, paid tribute to Ms James-Martin amid growing affection for the local woman, who moved to the area from South Australia with her family a few years ago.
A Football Margaret River spokesman said club members’ hearts were heavy at the news.
“Sarah and her family have been involved with the club for many years, with Sarah helping in a variety of ways, from sitting on the board to managing a team, through her constant and generous donations of Merritt wine, and of course, as a proud mother, supporting her children from the sidelines at every game,” they said.
“Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to Nick, George and Amelie, his extended family, friends and loved ones during this difficult and incomprehensible time.
“Rest in peace Sarah. You will be greatly missed and forever in our hearts. Thank you for everything you did to make our club a better place.”
Family friends said Ms. James-Martin’s energy and passion were on display every Saturday at the Margaret River Farmers’ Market in front of the Merritt Wines stand, and she enjoyed the market community.
FMR has proudly supported Football Margaret River, serving various terms on the board through sponsorship and providing constant encouragement to the George and Ami boys from the sidelines, whilst representing the regional Leeuwin-Naturaliste Junior Football Association and Football West WA Country teams.
Friends said it was difficult to come to terms with the local mother’s sudden death.
