The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for windy conditions on Thursday, March 12.

The forecaster said the warning covers parts of Central, Tayside and Fife, East Midlands, Grampian, North East England, North West England, SW Scotland, Lothian Borders, Strathclyde, Wales, West Midlands, Yorkshire and the Humber.

Strong winds are expected to be effective in the regions around 05:00 on Thursday. Dangerous winds are expected to continue affecting areas until 8pm. Yellow alert for wind was announced at 9.42am on Wednesday 11 March.

The Met Office’s forecast said: “Strong winds are expected across the UK on Thursday, associated with an active weather front moving south-eastwards. Wind gusts are expected to be 50-55 mph, with some coastal areas and high wind areas experiencing gusts of 60 mph or even 70 mph in a few places. Winds will ease from the north throughout the day.”

The Met Office advises: “People cope better with power outages when they are prepared in advance. This is easy to do – consider packing flashlights, batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essentials.”

“If you’re on the coast, stay safe in stormy weather by being aware of big waves. Big waves breaking even from the shore can knock you off your feet and sweep you out to sea. If walking near cliffs, be careful; know your route and keep your dogs under control. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: The Met Office recommends keeping weather forecasts in your area up to date when a weather warning is issued.”
