Met Office issues new weather forecast after ‘early taste of spring’ | Weather | News

The Met Office has issued a new weather forecast in the UK due to unstable conditions affecting the country following an “early taste of spring”. Last week the UK recorded the hottest day of 2026; Temperatures reached 20.9C in Wales, raising hopes the weather will calm across the country.
But according to the Met Office, the UK will experience a sudden change in weather conditions this week; WXCharts’ weather maps in some parts of the country show the mercury could drop as low as -5C. The change in conditions is likely to bring some frost and icing to parts of the UK, according to the forecaster. While weather experts claim that “winter will return this week”, maps are also turning blue, showing the possibility of freezing conditions.
According to the statement made by Meteorology, rain, sleet and snow showers will be seen in the northern part on Wednesday. Elsewhere, other parts of the UK are expected to have a stormy day due to cold winds.
It said: “Temperatures will drop overnight – potentially as low as -5C in rural Scotland – with widespread frost overnight for most, with the first frost set in the north on Thursday morning.”
“Most places remain dry on Thursday with sunny skies, but clouds and rain will later fall over Northern Ireland and the west.”
Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Steven Keates said: “Following mild and bright weather, the UK will become increasingly unsettled over the coming days.
“A range of weather patterns will bring occasional rain, strong winds and much colder weather through mid-week. Wednesday could be a big shock to the system.”
“Temperatures will range from 6 to 10 degrees, although temperatures will feel close to the low single digits in many windy areas.
“Showers are expected, especially in the higher elevations in the north, and a widespread frost (including icing for some) is possible on Wednesday night. The weather will be slightly milder by the end of the week, and rain will be seen again in many areas on Friday.”
Nick Finnis, meteorologist at Netweather.tv, wrote in his latest blog: “Cold air and streaks of rain look set to fall across the south-east of England on Tuesday night, followed by a colder, clearer flow from the north to the north-west; rain in the form of hail, sleet or sleet in many areas on Wednesday, with sunshine and showers falling even to lower levels, leaving limited snow to higher ground in the north and west. Wind chill is felt everywhere, so it’s worth breaking out winter gear again.”
“The temperature reaches 6-9°C at best, the wind chill makes the air feel colder than that.”
