Met Office issues yellow fog warnings after parts of UK battered by rain

Following heavy rains in the United Kingdom, a yellow fog warning was issued in some areas.

The Met Office has issued an overnight warning for north-west England, Wales and the West Midlands amid concerns fog may cause some disruption to travel on Thursday evening and overnight. The alarm was applied between 20.00 and 07.00 in the evening.

Fog areas are expected to become more widespread and dense on Thursday evening, and visibility is expected to drop below 100 meters in some places. The fog will then thin out to low clouds late at night or early Friday morning.

While a fog warning is issued for other parts of the country on Thursday night, it will be seen that the rain will subside.

The forecaster reminded people to avoid potential delays caused by dense fog by checking road conditions when driving, allowing extra travel time or changing plans if necessary.

“Make sure you know how to turn on your fog lights and check they are working before you set off on a journey,” the Met Office advised.

Bus and train services, as well as flights and ferry journeys, may also be affected by fog, with the Met Office advising people to be prepared for changing weather warnings and to follow advice from relevant travel companies.

It comes when it rains in parts of the UK stretching from the East Midlands southwards. The rain spread throughout the day, becoming persistent and heavy at times, then cleared towards the North East during the evening and overnight. Parts of the country saw 20 to 30 mm of rain, with some places falling in just a few hours. A further 40 to 50 mm was seen in a few isolated areas in southern England.

Five flood warnings have been issued along the River Severn, River Ouse and Kidbrooke Creek amid the downpour, with the Environment Agency warning floods are expected. The possibility of flooding continued elsewhere as the agency issued 117 alerts across the country.

The wet and foggy weather follows a chilly start to the year as freezing temperatures hit the country, with a range of weather warnings for snow, rain, ice and wind across the UK.

As the French-named Storm Goretti ravaged parts of the country last week, a rare red wind weather warning was issued in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

Some parts of Scotland saw so much snow that children were unable to go to school for a week as the downpours disrupted life.

Temperatures have since returned to average for this time of year, and low pressure continues to be to blame for the weather.
