However, according to the forecaster, conditions will become snowy in many parts of the country before we step into next month. The Met Office’s forecast for the next few days says some areas in the north-west and south-west are more likely to see rainfall Snow showers tonight and Saturday, January 31. Yellow warnings for rain are currently in force for Northern Ireland and south-west England; An additional Yellow warning is in place across south-west England early next week as further rainfall is expected in areas already affected by flooding.
According to the National Weather Agency, low pressure continues to prevail through the weekend; Rain or showers are expected in many parts of the UK on Saturday, but this will tend to change to more showers on Sunday, with drier and brighter interludes in places.
Temperatures will remain close to seasonal averages in most areas, but cooler weather will persist in the far northeast, supporting the risk of snowfall in the hills.
Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Dan Holley explained the reasons behind the current unsettled outlook: “We will continue to see a strong, southward shifting jet stream into next week, which will drive further low pressure systems from the North Atlantic closer to the UK.
“These will cause more rain from time to time, winds will strengthen and the risk of flooding in sensitive areas will continue. As this wet weather comes into contact with colder air here, it will also snow on the hills in the north from time to time.”
Nick Finnis, a meteorologist at Netweather.tv, wrote on the blog: “With low pressure near the south-west, more rain looks set to arrive from the south or south-west early next week, reaching most areas; generally the heaviest and most persistent rain towards the south and west, but a south-east or eastward flow in the north picking up moisture from the North Sea, the highlands of eastern Scotland may again see the biggest rainfall totals, as has been the case this week. The highlands in the north are likely to receive snow rather than rain. It is also cold weather at times.” “It spreads from the east to the North Sea.”
