Lavrov Accuses US Of Trying To Prevent India From Buying Russian Oil

Moscow : Russia accused the United States of trying to prevent India and other countries from buying Russian oil and said Washington was using a wide range of “coercive” measures, including tariffs, sanctions and outright bans, to achieve its goal of global economic dominance. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also accused the United States of using “unfair methods” to suppress rivals by imposing sanctions on Russian oil companies.

“(The US) is trying to control our trade, investment cooperation and military-technical ties with major strategic partners such as India and other BRICS members,” Lavrov said in an interview with BRICS TV on Monday. he said.

He said the West was reluctant to give up its former dominant positions. “With the advent of the (U.S. President Donald) Trump administration, this struggle to suppress rivals has become particularly pronounced and open,” he said.

Lavrov said that Russia accepted America’s proposal for Ukraine during the Alaska talks between President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Trump last year.

“We were told that the Ukrainian problem should be solved. We accepted the US proposal in Anchorage. More precisely, they suggested it and we agreed that the problem should be solved,” he said.

“By accepting their proposals, we have essentially fulfilled the task of resolving the Ukrainian issue and moving towards comprehensive, broad, mutually beneficial cooperation,” he added.

“But in practice, the opposite is happening: new sanctions are imposed, attacks on tankers in international waters are carried out in violation of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, and India and other partners are prevented from purchasing affordable Russian energy, while Europe has long banned such purchases, forcing them to buy American liquefied natural gas at significantly higher prices. Thus, in the economic sphere, the United States has effectively declared its goal of economic dominance,” he said.

Lavrov said that the United States aims to control all energy supply routes for all leading countries on the continents, including Europe, where they monitor the Nord Stream pipelines, the Ukrainian gas transportation system and the TurkStream pipeline.

“I emphasize this to emphasize that the goal of the United States is global economic domination, implemented through a wide range of coercive measures that are incompatible with fair competition, including tariffs, sanctions, outright bans and even communication restrictions on some partners. We must take all this into account,” Lavrov said. he said.

“Just like India, China, Indonesia and Brazil, we are in a situation where the Americans are creating artificial barriers along the way, even though we remain open to cooperation with all countries, including a major power like the United States,” he said.

While announcing a trade agreement with New Delhi last week, Trump claimed that India had agreed not to buy crude oil from Russia.

In an executive order, Trump rolled back a 25 percent surtax that India had imposed last August on crude oil supplies from Russia.

In the order, the US said it would monitor whether India continues direct or indirect purchases of Russian oil, which would determine whether a 25 percent tariff would be reimposed.

External Affairs Minister Vikram Misri on Monday said India will maintain multiple sources for crude oil purchases and diversify them to ensure stability in the supply chain, while national interests will remain the “guiding factor” for procurement.

Lavrov also said Russia would actively support India’s BRICS chairmanship with its “modern, highly relevant” current agenda, with an emphasis on counter-terrorism and energy security.

India officially assumed the chairmanship of BRICS, a 10-member bloc comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, along with five new members, on January 1, 2026.
