Russia’s NATO flyovers recall Turkey’s deadly but risky decision 10 years ago

ANKARA (Reuters) -Is the rash of the Russian violations of the Moon NATO airspace pushed to remember Türkiye’s rapid and deadly reaction when some allies dropped a Russian fighter plane passing through the southern border ten years ago.

Lithuanian Defense Minister Dovile Sakaliene said that in an X article, Türkiye called for a stronger action against Russia’s “tests” today, while NATO was “an example 10 years ago.”

In 2015, however, Türkiye was exposed to what NATO saw as the warm reaction and with the economic sprinkle of the decrease in the Russian jet. This, at the end of Ankara – and ironicly – caused Russia to look for closer ties with Moscow, even in the war in Ukraine.

Türkiye economy after the incident suffered

On November 24, 2015, a Turkish F-16 jet lower a Russian SU-24 close to the Syrian border. Dramatic images have shown that the burning aircraft, which has been a member of NATO and the first military participation between Moscow since the creation of the Alliance in 1949, has become a forest back.

Türkiye, which has the second largest army of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, has published repeated warnings before selecting the ongoing rules of participation. Moscow rejected violations, froze relations and slapped trade and tourism restrictions in Ankara.

Within a few hours, NATO organized an emergency meeting and expressed solidarity on Türkiye’s regional integrity, but also put pressure on the calm. The next steps, including surveillance and early warning flights, are designed to increase, not to confront the court.

However, the authorities made Türkiye feel vulnerable to Russia, the Black Sea neighbor, which was still engaged in a proxy war in Syria, and took part in a deputy war that Moscow supported President Bashar al -Assad and Ankara.

“The actions speak louder than words, dedi the former Turkish Ambassador Timur said he has experience in the US ties.

In the rise of the incident, the United States and other allies withdrew critical defense assets from Türkiye and left to defend the “permanent airspace violations and threats from the missile attacks from Syria”. “This created the scene and then the scene.”

The Turkish economy was forced by Russia’s trade pavements and later published what Moscow apologized.

At first, Türkiye returned to NATO allies to support their defenses, but due to cost, he decided not to take Patriot missiles.

He was later directed by a unsuccessful coup and a rapprochement with Moscow in the 2016-he acquired the Russian S-400s, enabled US sanctions and Türkiye to be removed from a production and purchasing program for F-35 jets, Fallout is still forced the US-Turkish ties.

Tayyip Erdoğan, the President of Türkiye, refused to participate in the western sanctions of Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin and Western sanctions in Moscow and to host the negotiations between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations, but peace is far away.

NATO responds more firmly to new attacks

In the fourth year, the Ukrainian War has now transformed Europe’s security views and threatened to spill into NATO member states in Eastern Europe in recent months.

Poland, Prime Minister Donald Tusk called Russia’s “large -scale provocation” after what he called the drone on September 10th. Estonia said three Russian military jets violated the airspace for 12 minutes on September 19.

Russia rejects hostile intentions against NATO.

Last week, they temporarily closed the airspace after the Danish and Norway’s repeated drone views. Denmark rejected participation in Russia.

The investigations gave a strong and unified reaction from NATO and encouraged Europe’s plans to increase their defenses.

NATO members are now confusing the jets in a few minutes and made political consultations in accordance with Article 4 of the Founding Agreement to signal the Allied Union.

However, NATO – at least so far – has refrained from lowering a manned Russian plane, which was a moving moving, which Putin said that he could trigger a dangerous climb following the example of Türkiye in 2015.
