Metro Tunnel to open on Tuesday, December 2, taking passengers earlier than expected

The initial schedule will include 30 off-peak trips each weekday, with the full schedule not starting until February 1.

During the summer soft launch, trains will run every 20 minutes from Westall and West Footscray stations between 10am and 3pm on weekdays.

All journeys during this period will be in addition to existing Sunbury and Pakenham/Cranbourne scheduled services, which will continue to operate via the City Loop until February when they are changed to operate via the Metro Tunnel only.

The exact timetable has not been announced, but the government has said that from February trains will run at least every 10 minutes between Watergardens and Dandenong from 6am to 10pm, with every three to four minutes during peak hours.

The Metro Tunnel project consists of a nine-kilometre rail tunnel between Kensington and South Yarra and five new tube stations: Anzac (opposite the Shrine of Remembrance), Town Hall, State Library, Parkville and Arden (in North Melbourne).
