Households urged to make 5 minute change to avoid snow and ice injuries | UK | News

Drivers in England are being asked to carry out a quick five-minute task over the next few days. The Met Office has issued a variety of weather warnings in parts of the country, warning Britons that roads and pavements are likely to be covered in ice and there will be an increased risk of injury from snow and ice covering areas.

Drivers are called upon not to travel in difficult conditions unless necessary, and to give themselves extra time to prepare for the journey if necessary. Following weather forecasts and warnings, experts advised drivers to stay safe on the roads for the next few days.

Mel Savage, head of insurance operations at Ripe Caravan Insurance, said: “This may seem obvious, but drivers are frequently fined for not cleaning their cars properly. “Police can issue a £60 fine and three points for driving with snow on the roof or the windscreen partially open.

“Ice, fog and condensation can reduce your visibility by up to 50%. Taking five minutes to thoroughly clean your vehicle is a true accident prevention measure.”

Drivers should also consider checking tire conditions and pressures, recognizing and reacting to black ice, preparing for possible breakdowns, and paying attention to local weather warnings.

Alongside its warning, the Met Office also reminded drivers that winter weather could make conditions dangerous.

The statement said: “Snowy and cold weather can cause delays and make driving conditions hazardous, so to keep yourself and others safe: plan your route, check for delays and road closures, change travel plans if necessary; if driving, allow more time to prepare and check your car before setting off; make sure you have the necessary items in your car in case of any delays (warm clothing, food, water, blankets, a flashlight, ice scraper/de-icer, a warning triangle, high-visibility vest and in-car phone charger).”

Winter hazards are expected to continue for the next few days; The coldest weather is likely on Wednesday, November 19 and Thursday, November 20.

Temperatures are expected to fall “well below average throughout the year”, so it’s crucial Brits follow advice and do what they can to keep themselves warm and safe in the cold weather.
