Former First Lady Michelle Obama lamented on Wednesday how the media highlighted her fashion choices and gleefully announced her outfit choice shortly after.

Obama appeared on the feminist “Call Her Daddy” podcast on Wednesday, where she promoted her new autobiographical book, “The Look.”“ “Michelle Obama explores the joy and purpose of fashion and beauty and how, when used with grace and care, they can elevate and affirm the values one holds most dear,” her description on Amazon summarizes.

The former First Lady recalled her early run in the public eye, connecting with the American public while supporting her husband, saying: “As my popularity grew, I was getting more coverage, right? And so the press comes on the scene, and now there are reports, right? And after all that great conversation and connection, the first thing would be ‘wearing’ at the beginning of the article. You know, not my education, not my professional career, but it started with looks, and it got worse as it got better.”

She argued that this emphasis on her fashion choices and appearance was a political tactic to slow down the political momentum of her husband, Barack Obama.
