Kyle Whittingham will be the next head coach of the Michigan Wolverines football program, with a deal reportedly coming weeks after the team fired Sherrone Moore for what officials described as an “inappropriate relationship” with a staff member. Moore was later arrested.
Whittingham and Michigan sign five-year contract ESPN reported Friday.
He will replace Biff Poggi, who was named interim head coach following Moore’s dismissal. Poggi floated the idea of taking over the business last week.

Whittingham will be the fifth head coach since Lloyd Carr retired following the 2007 season.
He announced earlier this year that he would step down as head coach of the Utah Utes after 20 seasons at the helm. He expressed interest in continuing his coaching career and quickly became one of a handful of coaches who could succeed Moore.
Whittingham, 66, served under Ron McBride and Urban Meyer in Utah. He had been with the program since 1994, when he first started as the defensive line coach. Michigan will be his second coaching stop. He is 177-88 years old of all time.

Michigan Wolverines head coach Sherrone Moore leads her team onto the field before the NCAA football game against the Ohio State Buckeyes at Michigan Stadium on November 29, 2025 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Michigan is considered one of the top football positions in the country despite the scandals that have plagued the school in recent years. One of the biggest was the sign-stealing scandal that led to Jim Harbaugh’s suspension. Moore was also suspended as part of the NCAA investigation.
Against all odds, Michigan won the national title in 2023 behind JJ McCarthy. The Wolverines were 15-0 that season, undefeated for the first time under Carr since 1997. The Wolverines won the national championship that year too.
Whittingham will be asked to right the ship that has been rocking for the past few weeks.
