Michigan county’s Charlie Kirk statue proposal blocked by Ferris State

Michigan County’s effort to immortalize Charlie Kirk failed.
Ferris State University recently refused to erect a statue of Turning Point USA CEO Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated a few weeks ago.
This effort was recommended by the Mecosta County Board of Commissioners, which voted to contact Ferris State University Chancellor Bill Pink about moving forward with the process.
Pink responded with a letter blocking the request, citing a university policy that only allows statues of people who have made an impact on the school.
Board members reportedly discussed erecting a bronze statue depicting Kirk’s likeness in partnership with Ferris State University’s art department. The statue would also include a plaque promoting the cooperation between the commission members and the university.

“While we condemn all acts of violence and offer our condolences on the tragic death of Mr. Kirk, the University follows a long-standing practice of limiting statues on campus to those who have made significant, direct contributions to Ferris State University itself,” the letter said. The only statue dedicated to a person on campus is founder Woodbridge N. Ferris.
“At the Sept. 18 meeting of the Mecosta County Board of Commissioners, Commissioner Chris Zimmerman, R-District 3, read to the board a draft letter to Pink recommending that a statue of Charlie Kirk be erected on the FSU campus. He also presented the board with a picture of a similar statue, according to meeting minutes. The board approved sending the letter by a 5-1 vote.” Detroit Free Press reported.
