Celine Cremer: New theories have emerged in search for missing Belgian woman, Tasmania

New theories have emerged about the disappearance of backpacker Celine Cremer after human remains and clothing were found scattered in a riverbed in northwestern Tasmania.

Belgian backpacker Celine Cremer, 31, disappeared on June 17, 2023, after traveling to Philosopher Falls, about 300 km northwest of Hobart.

It appears that he planned to take a short forest walk between the waterfalls but did not return.

His car was later found in the Falls car park and has not been seen since.

Miss Cremer was reported missing nine days after she failed to return from the forest path.

Police have restarted the search for the missing backpacker after human remains were found near where Ms Cremer disappeared on Friday.

Items of clothing, including a fleece jacket, were also found during the search.

In December 2025, Ms Cremer’s mobile phone was found approximately 300 meters from the hiking trail where she was last seen.

Her disappearance led volunteers in Tasmania, led by Australian private investigator Ken Gamble, to search for her remains.

Volunteers Jarrod Boys discovered human remains, believed to be female jawbones, along the riverbed on January 28.

Speaking to YouTuber Rob Parsons, who retraced his steps while searching for Ms Cremer’s remains, Mr Boys came up with a theory that he may have lost his phone during a walk in the woods.

“My theory is that he came from the top of the hill south of where he lost his phone,” he said.

Mr Boys said he was walking through dense bushland and may have lost his bearings.

“I thought he probably crossed the water race without realizing it, got into the river and had no idea if it was the river that the waterfall was on, not knowing which way he was facing or where he was in relation to the parking lot or any landmarks in the area,” he said.

Mr. Boys said Ms. Cremer may have followed her downriver and possibly “slipped on the bank” or “fell into the fast-moving water.”

He said he might not have discovered the ruins if it wasn’t for the summer “when the water is nice and low.”

“It’s pretty easy to see most of the area, especially what’s underwater in the winter,” he said.

Police confirmed the search had been temporarily suspended following the discovery of human remains.

“Following the discovery of further human remains and a number of clothing yesterday, crews were again winched (on Saturday) to a site along a section of the Arthur River,” a spokesman said.

Commander Nathan Johnston said: “Whilst it is unfortunate that we have not found any further items today, our crew have carried out an extensive search over the last two days and the discoveries made yesterday remain significant.

“At this stage, the search will not continue (Sunday) with a plan to reassess the situation.”
