Kyrsten Sinema joins conservative DC outlet as contributing columnist

The former Democratic senator has become an independent and Kyrsten Sinema will join the Washington Reporter as a columnist, the publication announced Monday.
“Senator Sinema is deeply respected across the aisle and brings a rare perspective shaped by her years in Congress,” founders Brian Colas and Garrett Ventry said in a statement. “His column will be an inside look at some of the most important policy debates.”
The two continued“This is another step toward establishing the Reporter as an independent, nonpartisan publication dedicated to serious reporting and real policy insights. The Reporter will announce more contributing columnists in the coming weeks.”

In a statement to Fox News Digital, Colas explained that the Washington Reporter reached out to Sinema’s team to offer a different perspective to its more conservative audience.
“The Reporter is a center-right publication, but our goal is to reach a bipartisan audience, so we’re adding some columnists who will speak to independents and Democrats alike,” Colas said. “For Senator Sinema, our Republican audience also finds her views fascinating, especially some of the policy debates like artificial intelligence, drug pricing, and financial services.”

Sinema, a former senator from Arizona, was at odds with the Democratic Party during the Biden administration after initially opposing then-President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better plan and expressing support for the filibuster despite pressure from the party to eliminate it.

Sinema changed her party affiliation to independent in 2022 and will not run for re-election in 2024.
Despite his party’s backlash, Colas told Fox News Digital that the overall reaction to Sinema joining the Washington Reporter has been largely positive.

“We’ve had a lot of offices reach out to us and say this is a fascinating move, and we look forward to seeing or reading what Senator Sinema thinks about the issues because they see her as someone who can speak across the aisle and really understands how legislation gets done. So the feedback has been unanimously positive,” Colas said.

Colas said Sinema will join former Politico reporter Rachael Bade’s efforts to expand her audience.

The New York Post reported in December that the Justice Department and the FBI under the Biden administration were considering launching a criminal investigation after Sinema left the Democratic Party.
