Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison made an irreverent prediction about what will come of Wednesday’s U.S. House hearing on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., into his state’s fraud scandal.

“Listen, you’ll hear a lot of bull from Republicans who would rather play politics than protect Minnesotans’ money,” Ellison wrote. “The truth is, I’m proud to hold the record as the most effective prosecutor on Medicaid and civil fraud. Despite Republican obstruction, my office has prosecuted more than 300 criminals and recovered over $70 million for the state.”

The Democrat made his comment about X as the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform began its hearing titled “Oversight of Fraud and Misuse of Federal Funds in Minnesota: Part I.”

“I have proactively combated consumer fraud by shutting down fraudulent nonprofits, cracking down on student loan scammers, and returning millions to victims of predatory corporations,” Ellison added. “Let’s be clear: MN Fraud and Oversight Committee Chair Kristen Robbins said it took 15 meetings, but no bill passed and zero cases of fraud.”

More than 90 people, mostly from Minnesota’s large Somali community, have been charged in what has been described as the nation’s largest Covid-era scheme since 2022. It still tabulates how much money was stolen through money laundering operations involving fraudulent food and housing programs, daycares and Medicaid services. But the scope of the fraud could exceed $1 billion and go as high as $9 billion, the U.S. attorney in Minnesota said.

“There is more than $300 million involved in the Feeding Our Future child nutrition program scandal, and Feeding Our Future investigations have revealed that half of those charged also ran other programs funded by Medicaid,” Robbins, who testified as a witness at a U.S. House hearing, said.

“Even though this was known in 2023, Tim Walz and his agencies did nothing to prevent the defendants from receiving additional government money. We have now found fraud in numerous Medicaid programs, including autism centers, sober homes, non-emergency medical transportation, integrated community supports, and housing stability,” Robbins said. added Robbins.

He also said: “Last year, when the Minnesota Legislature was either controlled by Republicans or out of control by Democrats, we created the Fraud Prevention and State Agency Oversight Committee.”

“Since last February, we have held 15 hearings where we grilled officials, uncovered new areas of fraud, and reiterated flagged failures and internal controls,” Robbins said.
