PM picks ex-South Australian premier for UK envoy

Anthony Albanese has appointed former South Australian premier Jay Weatherill as Australia’s next high commissioner to the United Kingdom.
Announcing the appointment on Monday, the Prime Minister said Mr Weatherill was “an entirely appropriate appointment” and highlighted the incoming envoy’s defense credentials.
“He served as the 45th premier of South Australia for over six years,” Mr Albanese told reporters at Parliament House.
“He championed the national debate on sovereign defense capability, renewable energy targets, and environmental protection.
“He served in the South Australian parliament for 16 years, including not only prime minister but treasurer, state ministers for development, education and environment.
“As Prime Minister he was instrumental in establishing South Australia’s leadership in the defense industry, including submarine construction.
“As a proud South Australian and our future high commissioner, Jay is well placed to lead AUKUS forward in our nation’s interests, particularly through our SSN AUKUS in partnership with the United Kingdom.”
