Miss Piggy movie on way from Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone and Cole Escola | The Muppets
Miss Piggy is getting the movie star treatment thanks to Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone.
A feature film about the Diva puppet is in development at Disney, which owns the rights to the Muppets franchise, Variety reports. reported on Wednesday. Lawrence and Stone will serve as producers and will work from the script for Oh Mary! Created by Cole Escola.
“I don’t know if I can explain this, but I’ll just do this… Emma Stone and I are doing a Miss Piggy movie and Cole is writing it,” Lawrence said on the Las Culturistas podcast hosted by Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers. When the excited co-hosts asked if Lawrence and Stone, longtime friends and two of the most successful screen actors of their generation, would star in the project together, Lawrence quipped, “I guess so. We should… It sucks.” [that we haven’t done a movie together].”
Lawrence also made her Broadway debut in Escola’s historical comedy Oh, Mary!, in which various actors from Jane Krakowski to Tituss Burgess took on the role of Mary Todd Lincoln after her exit from the show. He announced that he was thinking of doing it with. The intense physical comedy, for which Escola won the Tony for best actor in a play, reimagines the former First Lady as a historically clueless, alcoholic, aspiring cabaret singer who benefits greatly from her husband’s assassination.
“This is a joke that he’s in on,” Lawrence told the podcast. “I felt like I could be big and be in on the joke.” He said he decided not to pursue the role after considering the physical challenges of Broadway’s grueling eight-show-a-week schedule.
“I don’t think I can be good [theater] …it’s all your body and your voice,” he said. “The only time I want to do theater is when I say, Oh, Mary! ‘Eight shows a week and six weeks of rehearsals,’ they said. ‘Is there a nursery there?’ I asked. “It definitely wouldn’t work.”
Lawrence is currently promoting Die, My Love, a psychological thriller about a crumbling marriage, in which she stars opposite Robert Pattinson. Stone’s latest film, Bugonia, a dark conspiracy theory comedy that marks his fifth collaboration with director Yorgos Lanthimos, premiered last month; She won her second Best Actress Oscar in 2024 for her role in Lanthimos’s Poor Things.
The Miss Piggy feature film, if it materializes, would be the character’s first solo outing since Jim Henson’s debut in 1976. The prima donna started out as the chorus pig on Henson’s The Muppet Show, then slowly became a bigger part of the series, stealing the spotlight from her frog lover, Kermit.
As the Muppet characters celebrate their 70th anniversary, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg announced last month that they would renew The Muppet Show for its 50th anniversary. A Disney+ special featuring guest star Sabrina Carpenter will air in 2026, with a new series expected to follow.
