MLB All-Star Sandy Alomar Sr. dead at 81 after playing, coaching career

Former MLB All-Star Sandy Alomar Sr., who played 15 seasons in the league and was also the coach and manager of the Puerto Rico national team, passed away at the age of 81.

Alomar played for six teams during his MLB tenure, and many teams, including the New York Yankees, mourned the loss of one of their own.

“The Yankees mourn the passing of Sandy Alomar Sr. and extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and loved ones.”

The Cleveland Guard also noted that they were notified of Alomar’s death by his family. Sandy Alomar Jr. is on Cleveland’s roster and also played in winter ball and minor league ball for his father alongside Hall of Fame brother Roberto Alomar.

“Our thoughts are with the Alomar family today as the baseball community mourns his death,” the Guardians wrote on social media.

Alomar Sr. began his major league career with the Milwaukee Braves in 1964 and played 19 games for the team that season. He was with the team during its move to Atlanta before playing for the New York Mets.

Alomar played half a season with the Mets before joining the Chicago White Sox. After his time in Chicago, Alomar found a more stable home with the California Angels and would spend his All-Star season there.

In 162 games and 735 plate appearances, Alomar Sr. hit .251/.302/.293 with 18 doubles, two triples and two home runs with 36 RBIs.

Alomar Sr. was known for his ability to shift bags on the base paths and superior fielding skills, while tallying 227 stolen bases in 1,481 career games.

After his playing days were over, he began coaching the San Diego Padres in the 1980s, eventually serving as the team’s third base coach from 1986-90. Alomar Sr. he also coached the Chicago Cubs, Colorado Rockies and Mets.
