MLB World Series Game 2: LA Dodgers beat Toronto Blue Jays 5-1 to level at 1-1

Pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto and catcher Will Smith led the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 5-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays to move into a 1-1 tie in the best-of-seven World Series.

Japanese right-hander Yamamoto needed just 105 pitches to record his second straight postseason complete game.

Meanwhile, Smith led the Dodgers’ offense with three runs (RBI) as the Blue Jays had a night to forget.

Unlike the free-scoring opener, the second game was a shooting duel that lasted long periods of time at Toronto’s Rogers Centre.

The Dodgers took the lead in the top of the first inning when Smith drove in Freddie Freeman, but after that he was tied by Blue Jays starting pitcher Kevin Gausman, who retired the next 17 Dodgers batters he faced without allowing a baserunner.

Although the Canadian team tied the game in the bottom of the third inning when Alejandro Kirk’s sacrifice fly scored George Springer, the game remained deadlocked until the top of the seventh inning until Smith and Max Muncy lifted Gausman with a solo home run over the left field fence to give the 2024 champions a two-run lead.

The Blue Jays fell apart in the top of the eighth inning, and as the Dodgers scored on a wild pitch, Smith recorded his third RBI of the night, making the score 5-1.

And even though the Dodgers’ bullpen suffered defeat in game one, Yamamoto was able to give his relievers a night off by pitching all nine innings without any fear.

The series will now move to Los Angeles for the next three games, with the third game to be played Monday night at Dodger Stadium.
