Robert de Niro’s £360m skyscraper will be tallest building outside London | UK | News

Once completed, the 76-storey Nobu Manchester building will surpass the current tallest skyscraper outside London (currently Deansgate Square’s South Tower) and become the third tallest skyscraper in the UK.

The 246-meter-high skyscraper will include a 160-room hotel, 452 privately owned serviced residences and a Nobu restaurant. Construction of the new £350 million tower will begin later this year and is expected to be completed before 2030.

“I’m looking forward to returning when it’s finished, if not before,” the star said in November 2025, according to the BBC. “I think it will last six years and I plan to be around.”

He continued: “I haven’t seen the city yet but I’d love to go back. Everyone is so nice, we’re having such a great time. It’s great to be in Manchester because it has real character, we’re proud to be part of it.”

The development of Nobu Manchester

There is also a second building in the Nobu Manchester project. The 23-storey building on Manchester’s Great Bridgewater Street will feature 133 homes targeting the affordable housing market.

The skyscraper marks the company’s first hotel and residence in the UK. The restaurant in Manchester will be the company’s second location in the UK, after Nobu London.

According to the BBC, Manchester City Council leader Bev Craig said: “It’s not every day you watch Robert De Niro buy a flat on Deansgate, do you?”

He hailed the project as “a symbol that international businesses are choosing Manchester” and added: “It’s a boost; we’ve said for a long time that we want to be a world-class city and if you want to be a world-class city you need to get global names.”

“It’s a huge boost for Manchester that we see global companies, not just actors but global names, going to cities where they can only succeed.”

What is Nobu?

The Nobu brand began as a Japanese-Peruvian restaurant co-founded in 1994 by actor-chef Nobu Matsuhisa and businessman Meir Teper.

A regular customer of Matsuhisa’s Los Angeles restaurant, De Niro turned him down when he first suggested opening a restaurant together in the late ’80s. But the chef eventually came up with the idea and became the center of attention for celebrities.

His hospitality empire has expanded to more than 50 restaurants and 40 hotels worldwide.
