Umar Khalid Case: Why Did US Politicians And Zohran Mamdani Write Letters From America? | World News

A political controversy has emerged after letters from the US emerged in support of Umar Khalid, who is currently in jail in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots case. Letters written by US-based political figures drew attention to what critics described as ideological support for defendants detained from abroad.
Two letters in particular were taken into consideration. One of them was written by Zohran Mamdani, the Mayor of New York and a leading figure in left-leaning political circles in the USA, while the other was signed by eight US lawmakers. Allegedly, similar concerns are expressed in both letters, but their tone differs.

The focus was largely on Mamdani’s letter addressed directly to Umar Khalid. The four-line letter, written in December 2025, refers to Khalid as “lover” and states that he remembers Mamdani’s words, is happy to meet her parents, and continues to worry about her. This has raised questions about why a political leader nearly 13,000 kilometers away wrote to an accused in the Delhi riots case and what kind of connection there is between the two.
While Khalid’s family responded to the letter, it was pointed out that his family visited the USA in December 2025. It was claimed that during this visit, an attempt was made to project a narrative suggesting injustice towards a Muslim youth in India and to suggest that justice was not provided.
Eight US lawmakers request bail and timed hearing for Khalid
The second letter, signed by eight US lawmakers, expressed concern that Khalid had been imprisoned for nearly five years and called for his release on bail. The MPs demanded a timed trial and a fair investigation, saying that the case should be heard in accordance with international law standards.
Critics Slam ‘Ideological Support’ Abroad Amid Accusations of Sedition
Criticism of the letters focused on the fact that Umar Khalid is an accused in the Delhi riots case and is facing allegations that he incited violence during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act and was part of a larger conspiracy. It was stated that the courts identified him as the defendant of a criminal conspiracy based on the currently available evidence.
Questions have also been raised about what critics describe as selective concern, with allegations of silence on violence against Hindus in Bangladesh while supporting Khalid.
It was also claimed that Mamdani and US lawmakers were questioning India’s judicial system by writing such letters. It was mentioned that Indian courts decided to grant bail to other defendants in the Delhi riot cases, while Khalid was kept in custody due to the seriousness of the charges against him.
