CBSE Board Exams 2026 guidelines: List of allowed and prohibited items for class 10 and 12 students

As CBSE board exams approach, students focus on reviewing formulas, diagrams and case studies. However, many people still enter the exam hall confused about allowed and prohibited substances. Here is a simple guide explaining what is and is not allowed in Class 10 and Class 12 board exams.

Calculators: Not Allowed (With Rare Exceptions)

For majority of students appearing for CBSE Class 10 and 12 exams:

• Calculators are strictly prohibited.
• This rule applies to courses like Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Accounting and others.
• Scientific calculators are also not allowed.

Are there exceptions?
Yes, but only in certain cases:

• Students with comparative disabilities are subject to prior approval.
• Certain professional matters if officially declared.

In these cases, prior permission from CBSE through the concerned school is mandatory. Students cannot make this decision independently.

Science and Math Tools: Allowed Items

Students are usually allowed to bring basic geometry tools such as:

• transparent ruler
• Compass
• divider
• Protractor
• Pencil (for diagrams and graphs)
• Eraser and sharpener

Geography Maps: Provided by CBSE

A common misconception is that students need to carry maps from home. As per CBSE rules:

• Necessary draft maps are provided with the question paper.
• If instructed, students should carefully indicate their roll numbers on the map sheet.
• The chart paper must be securely tied inside the answer booklet before being delivered.

Graph Paper: Supplied from the Exam Center

For subjects such as Mathematics, Economics or Physics:

• Graph paper is usually provided by the testing center when required.
• Students should not bring their own graph paper.

Important Presentation Rules

Many students overlook basic writing and presentation rules. Keep these in mind:

• Use pencil only for diagrams and graphs.
