Canada took on Trump in Davos, why is India staying silent? | World News

New Delhi: At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney gave a powerful speech that many observers saw as a mirror of the current US-dominated world order. He explained that middle-power countries face a tough choice to either compete with each other for support or come together boldly to forge a new path.
He suggested that countries, including India, would remain cautious for now, while Canada was willing to take risks to speak out. Carney emphasized that the current global system is not only in transition, it is facing a destructive process and the illusion of stability is fading.
He argued that the old world order would not return and that instead of lamenting its collapse, nations should begin to build a new, justice-oriented international system. He called on middle power countries to get out of confusion and act decisively.

Carney was aware of the risks of criticizing US policies. The country’s economy is largely based on trade, and 75 percent of its exports in 2024 will go to the United States.
Trump took a step back
The next day, US President Donald Trump arrived in Davos and responded to Carney’s remarks. He criticized the Canadian leader for not showing enough gratitude to the United States. He argued that Canada has benefited extensively from Washington and should acknowledge this. Trump claimed in his Davos speech that Carney did not do this.
Trump reminded people that he had previously joked or suggested that Canada could become the 51st state of the United States. Despite these pressures, Ottawa responded, raising questions about why other nations, including India, remain silent in the face of US policies that affect their interests.
During his first term, Trump prevented India from buying oil from Iran. In his second term, he postponed projects in Iran’s Chabahar port and pressured India to cut oil imports from Russia.
The US has also engineered political change in Venezuela, imposed sanctions on India’s energy ventures, and during military conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine, New Delhi has refrained from condemning actions aligned with US interests.
Unlike Canada, which speaks boldly, India focuses on strategic independence by carefully addressing global pressures without openly criticizing US policies.
