Morrisons rolls out major change to checkouts across the country

Morrisons is making major changes to all its stores in a bid to make self-checkout machines “more efficient” for customers.

The Bradford-based supermarket has announced it is introducing stylish new tills to replace older models as part of a nationwide revamp.

The retailer has been updating both self-service and operated tills in all stores since May and plans to complete the upgrade in the near future.

A Morrisons spokesman said: Independent: “Since May 2025, we have been updating a significant portion of both colleague and self-service checkout across all our stores to make them more efficient, and the refresh will be completed very soon.

“New technology will ensure we can continue to provide excellent levels of service to our customers now and into the future.”

The chain recently completed improvements to its supermarket in Swindon, off Dorcan Road, in an effort to provide a better service.

One shopper said: Swindon Advertiser: “They definitely feel new and shiny, much sleeker and slimmer than the old ones. But I can’t say I’ve noticed much difference in the way they do.”

Another said the new cases are “much better” at scanning barcodes since the update.

Morrisons also announced this week that all of its accessible toilets in England, Scotland and Wales are now “stoma-friendly”, including features and customer feedback recommended by Colostomy UK.

The company said the changes include hooks for clothing or bags, a shelf for supplies, a bin for discreet disposal and a mirror to assist with device checks.

Morrisons worked with MSP and introduced the new facilities, advocating for stoma society Edward Mountain, after he wrote to the retailer to share his experience with a stoma after being diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2022.

Mr Mountain said: “As a bowel cancer survivor and someone who has experienced the consequences of bowel surgery and a stoma, I cannot emphasize how important this is.

“These new facilities will make bathrooms easier to use, more accessible, and bring an end to the hassle, embarrassment and discomfort many of us have faced up to this point.”

Morrisons corporate affairs director David Scott said: “By making the facilities easier to use in all Morrisons stores, we hope this will provide reassurance when out and about and represent a step towards reducing everyday barriers and improving access to suitable facilities across the country.”
