Studio Green rushes to Madras High Court to get Karthi-starrer Vaa Vaathiyar released

Popular film production company Studio Green Films rushed to Madras High Court to get its film Vaa VaathiyarThe Karthi-starrer was released as soon as possible by the court last month, changing the prohibitory order that prevented the release of the film.

The amendment application has been listed for hearing before the Bench of Justices SM Subramaniam and C. Kumarappan on Friday, January 9, 2026. The production company urged the court to relax the order requiring it to pay 21.78 billion rupees before releasing the film.

Vaa Vaathiyar It was originally scheduled for release on December 12, 2025. However, he could not be released as the Official Counsel of the High Court filed an execution petition seeking directions from the production house to pay dues amounting to ₹ 21.78 crore to KE Gnanavel Raja.

It was brought to the notice of the court that Mr. Gnanavel Raja had entered into an agreement with businessman Arjunlal Sunderdas (since deceased) in 2011 to co-produce a film by investing ₹ 40 crore each. As per the agreement reached between them, Sunderdas had invested ₹12.85 crore in the film.

However, after parting with such a large sum, the businessman abandoned the project and decided not to be involved in production anymore. He was subsequently declared bankrupt and the Official Trustee was given the responsibility of determining his assets and liabilities.

The Official Assignee found that Mr. Gnanavel Raja had to repay ₹ 10.35 crore to the insolvent and therefore filed an application in the High Court in 2016 seeking directions to repay the amount with 18% interest from 2013 onwards. The Division Bench allowed the application in 2019.

Since then, the Official Trustee had been filing a series of petitions in the Supreme Court and receiving partial payments before every screening of the film produced by Mr. Gnanavel Raja. The last of such petitions was filed in December last year, before publication. Vaa Vaathiyar.

After noting that Mr. Gnanavel Raja’s liability had increased over the years to ₹ 21.78 crore, including interest, the Division Bench had prohibited the release of the film until the judgment amount was paid in full.
