Mother-in-law of man detained near Mexico in connection with Nancy Guthrie claims he’s innocent

The mother-in-law of the man detained in connection with the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie has spoken out.

The Arizona woman, who identified herself as Josefina, told NewsNation she believes her son-in-law is innocent.

Josefina told the press that her son-in-law was at their home in Rio Rico when the 84-year-old man disappeared on February 1.

The person involved was detained during a traffic stop and He was just miles from the Mexican border when police caught up with him.

Although authorities have detained one person in connection with the incident, that person has not been named as a suspect at this time, NewsNation reported.

He told the press of his son-in-law’s detention: “My daughter, she and the kids, my grandchildren were doing DoorDash when they were stopped here.”

He also said CNN officials searched his home after receiving a tip about the investigation.

‘I told them you could go in and search my house, there was no one there. I have nothing to hide,’ said Josefina.

While authorities continue to investigate the detained man, he insisted his son-in-law had ‘nothing to do’ with the 84-year-old man’s disappearance.

Josefina added that police did not obtain a search warrant before entering her home.

‘I’m sorry for what happened to you’ [the Guthries]” he said.

‘I don’t know them, I don’t know anything about their lives or what’s going on but I’m so sorry; I hope whoever took him returned safe and sound.’

Authorities also showed Josefina security footage of the suspect from Nancy Guthrie’s ring camera, but Josefina said he bore no resemblance to her son-in-law.

The video showed an armed figure wearing a balaclava, carrying a backpack and wearing black latex gloves.

The suspect is also seen tampering with Nest’s doorbell camera, a mother of three, and removed the camera from its holder in the door frame.

‘They showed me a video to see if it was him, if I recognize the things he’s wearing he doesn’t have any of that. “There’s nothing in the video,” he told ABC15’s Lillian Donahue.

Josefina said her son-in-law was a ‘good man’ and had no previous criminal record, assuring her that she was ‘positive’ he was at home when Guthrie was kidnapped.

‘He stays at my house on weekends. “He’s not going anywhere,” he told the outlet.

It is unclear whether police believe the man in custody is the gunman in the video.

Speaking exclusively to the Daily Mail, a witness described the traffic stop in which the person involved was taken into custody.

‘There were five or six unmarked cars and a silver SUV pulled over and a police car across from it. Krystal Bacica said two men got out of the car and had “FBI” written on their hats.

‘It said the only police car marked was Marana Police,’ he continued, ‘and they pulled it up in front of my apartment building on Frontage Road in Rio Rico.’
