Kochi Metro’s Pink Line, which will connect Kaloor to Kakkanad, is scheduled to become operational in June 2026. The project, initially covering five stations, promises to improve regional connectivity, reduce traffic congestion and increase passenger numbers to 50 lakh per month. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 1,957 crore.

Passengers in Kochi are set to get a huge boost next year as Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) announced that the long-awaited Pink Line is likely to become operational by June 2026. The new corridor will connect the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kaloor with Kakkanad, significantly improving travel convenience and reducing congestion in the busiest areas of the city.

According to KMRL officials, the expansion of the metro will play a vital role in increasing regional mobility and will also contribute to the economic activities of the city. Spanning 11.2 kilometers, the project comes at an estimated cost of R1,957 million and aims to provide a faster, more efficient method of transport to thousands of commuters every day.

Opening of Stations on a Phase Basis

Pink Line services will initially operate at five major stations: Palarivattom Junction, Alinchuvadu, Chembumukku, Vazhakkala and Padamugal. Operations at the remaining five stations, including Civil Station Junction, Cochin SEZ, Chittattukara, KINFRA and Infopark, are expected to begin by the end of 2026 after completion of construction.

The route of the corridor passes through important commercial and residential areas, making it one of the most strategically important areas in the Kochi Metro network, officials added.

Construction Progress and Expected Impact

Most of the construction work has already been completed. Approximately 1,145 of 2,019 piles have been constructed, while 265 of 368 columns and 165 of 469 pile caps have also been completed. This progress indicates that the project is on track for planned completion.

With the launch of the Pink Line, Kochi Metro is expected to increase passenger numbers significantly. Currently, the metro serves around 30 lakh passengers every month; The figure for KMRL projects may rise to 50 lakh after the Pink Line starts operations. The new corridor will not only reduce travel time between central Kochi and the suburbs, but will also help reduce traffic congestion in the city’s IT and business hubs.

The phase will connect important areas such as Technopark, Thiruvananthapuram International Airport, Thampanoor Bus Stand, Central Railway Station, Secretariat and Medical College, marking another important step towards improving the urban transport infrastructure of the state.
