The father of two babies, who died in a house fire that killed four people, was being treated for cancer when he learned that his children were dead.

Jake Symons, 21, has barely been able to talk since he was told his two children – 20-month-old Maddison and five-month-old Desmond – were killed in the fire that ripped through the family home on Thursday.

Family friend 36-year-old Mathew Chilly and a young man whose identity has not yet been determined also died in a fire in central Queensland.

The devastated father showered emotional and loving tributes to his children and asked for forgiveness for not being with them.

“Daddy’s little best friend,” Symons wrote.

“There were so many things I wanted to show you and watch you grow. In the next life we’ll take these etc. things and play football – it won’t be long.”

She described her “little madie moo” as her everything, but said she would be there for them before long.

“My first love, my everything. My father is my number one,” she wrote.

“Baby, I’m sorry I wasn’t there my little princess tough freak. I’m sorry big girl I wasn’t there, it won’t be long.”

“It’s just a bad dream that I can’t wake up from because it’s not real, I can’t believe it.”
