Multi-Faith Shrines Planned Along Musi River

Hyderabad: The state government has envisioned the ambitious Musi rejuvenation project not just as a riverside development effort but also as a platform to promote social harmony. The government’s presentation of the project on Friday said the initiative was a “secular engagement” that involved building religious venues representing multiple faiths along the river.

A temple in Manchirevula, a mosque in Puranapul, a gurudwara in Gowliguda and a church in Nagole are planned. The idea is to symbolically reflect Hyderabad’s long-standing tradition of religious co-existence and cultural diversity while developing the riverfront.
The project also aims to integrate heritage tourism with social and cultural spaces along the river corridor. Various historical landmarks in the Musi river and its basin will be combined under the initiative, creating a heritage circuit showcasing the rich past of Hyderabad.
The areas proposed to be covered include Qutb Shahi tombs, Golconda fort, Taramati Baradari, Shri Veerabhadra Swami Devalayam in Rajendranagar, Supreme Court, Puranapul, Government City College, the historic British Residency building where Koti Women’s University is now located, Osmania General Hospital, Charminar and Macca Masjid.
According to the presentation, World Monuments Fund India was providing support for the initial assessment of six heritage structures as part of the project that aims to combine river rejuvenation with heritage conservation and tourism development.
