Murder accused driver ‘sped up’ before fatal collision

A driver accused of murder accelerated and “violently swerved” just before crashing into a man during a road rage-inspired car chase, a jury has heard.

Umar Hussein Alkhalifa Al Enizi, 24, has pleaded not guilty to the murder of Troy Edward Vandenberg at Browns Plains, south of Brisbane, on September 17, 2021.

A Queensland Supreme Court jury heard 25-year-old Vandenberg died meters from his home from injuries sustained when Al Enizi crashed into him with a white Audi.

On Tuesday, the jury heard testimony from witnesses along the path where Vandenberg was shot and thrown into the air.

Truck driver Michael Columbus testified that a white vehicle targeted Vandenberg, who was topless at the time, and moved toward him.

“The car accelerated, turned into him, hit him and then continued on,” Columbus said.

“I saw someone running outside and I saw the car speed up and hit him.”

The jury heard Vandenberg’s airborne body was initially mistaken for a piece of rubbish by lorry driver Robert Mackenzie.

“I was about 500 meters behind [Al Enizi’s car]. It shifted violently to the right. I thought this hit a box. “It flew in the air across the road,” Mackenzie said.
