Nainar Nagenthran slams DMK govt. over delay in procurement of sugarcane, raw rice for Pongal gift hamper

Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagenthran on Friday, January 2, 2025, criticized the DMK government for alleged delay in procurement of raw rice and sugarcane from farmers to be distributed to ration card holders as part of the Pongal gift basket.

“At a time when the public was expecting ₹5,000 in cash as Pongal gift and farmers were hoping to buy turmeric and jaggery to include in the gift basket, the DMK government allocated only a paltry amount. This has shattered the expectations of farmers and the public,” Mr. Nagenthran said.

The BJP leader also alleged that there were delays in purchasing sugarcane, raw rice and sugar from farmers for distribution as part of the Pongal gift basket. “Is the state government planning to make hasty, last-minute purchases to fool farmers and the public?” he asked.
